Style Icon Series No.6 – Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor is the quintessential icon- her style is dramatized and reproduced and eclipses what access we may ever have to her essential self. Her life is one of decadence, myriad eccentricities, and a remarkable devotion to realizing beauty — her book My Love Affair With Jewelry tells the story of her life refracted through her collections of extravagant baubles. Her caustic wit and flair for the dramatic never compromise her elegance, only bolster a picture of her as warm, demanding, dynamic- a real dame. She makes indulgence a seduction, an inspiration, and finally, a bravura performance. And oh, those eyes.

Blue Valentine (sigh)

Pretty sure this movie is going to break our hearts, but that probably won’t stop us seeing this at the Pageant Theatre this week. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling play a pair of blue collar star-crossed lovers and their dynamic and flawless chemistry has created quite a buzz.

Playing at the Pageant Theatre in Chico. Visit http://www.pageantchico.com/ for show times.

A Bag for Breasts and Bread

“Say whaaat?” So it’s quite simple: this is a bra made out of ecopet fiber (polyester manufactured from recycled plastic bottles) that transforms into a reusable bag. May cause a scene at the grocery checkout, but kudos to you for bringing your own bag!

Rescued Sheep, Grandmas, and High Fashion Models

This unlikely trio makes more sense located within the context of a Britain-based knitting circle that produces couture pieces through an entirely green process. They rescue the sheep from slaughter houses, process and dye the wool locally, and then employ local friends, family members, and grannies to produce the beautiful high-fashion knit-wear sold all over Europe under the label The North Circular.

The North Circular was conceived by fashion model Lily Cole, who has more than a few ties within the industry to promote this green endeavor. Hopefully more of the famed will use their resources to create a more sustainable fashion industry.

Good work Lily.

Hello Edie

Oh Edie, to this day we don’t know whether to view you as an exceptionally self-aware genius, an exploited tragedy, a warning tale of over indulgence, or a fast burning flare of light, too bright for the world. We only know your influence, without a doubt, endures, and every new generation of those of us aspiring to be carelessly vogue, keep looking back to you. We keep dancing around in black tights, painting on the liquid eyeliner and hoping to capture something you built in your factory daze.

Singing the Blues

A simple sweater with the perfect pop of color can transform a basic ensemble into a definable “look.” Royal blue is a go-to choice for just such a metamorphosis, not to mention it’s fantastic side effect of making you all warm and cozy.
